Refineme.org updates

Goodbye to the Kapitbahay

Today, I sadly close one of my blogs. Goodbye to the Chismosang Kapitbahay (pbb2.refineme.org).

Why am I closing my PBB Blog down?

  • I am so late in the news about Pinoy Big Brother 2 already.
  • I hardly have time to update it anymore because of work and other things I have to do.
  • I need to do a clean-up of my space in my domain to make room for other projects.
  • To be totally honest, I am finding PBB Season 2 kind of boring. I actually don’t mind missing it anymore, because nothing interesting is really happening.

Maybe I’ll do another one next time, for the next season, when I have more time. But for now, I’d settle for watching it, reading from the site and reading some of the PBB Blogs out there.

Till then. Goodbye Chismosang Kapitbahay.

Designing, and then some

Let’s continue being geeky because I’ve got some updates. No, no new themes (yet), but just some plain domain updates. Look up at the navigation menu and you’ll see that there seems to be a lot of new things there. Well, you’re right, there are a lot of new things there. Let’s list them, shall we?

  • Domain Information – I delayed adding this before because I haven’t got the screenshots of the past two layouts up, plus I wanted to do some revisions. Anyway, they’re up now, with minor revisions, mainly on the content. Oh, and I just took a look at my entire layout history — man, I’ve been through so many years and layouts, what else can I do to add variety? Hmmm.
  • WP Themes – Yes, I’m standing up to this newfound geekness I started doing so I have a separate page for my WP Themes. I’m still thinking if I need to put up a separate page for each theme, but since I’m still new at this and I only have two themes up for now, one page will suffice.
  • Contact – I can’t find a place to stick the contact form other than this page, so here. :) I need to make new link buttons.
  • Writings Finally, I figured out how to manage my subpages! I didn’t want to put it up without proper navigation and after some short code tweaking, it works! I will put up some NaNoWriMo dedicated pages, but you may now hop over there and read old writings and maybe even comment. :P
UPDATE 11:33PM: NaNoWriMo novel pages are up! :)
  • About Me – This is not new, but I put up some subpages there too. I still have to revise these pages just because I want to.

I also put up links to my (yet to be updated again) online portfolio and Godchicks, of course. =)

Can I just say I really enjoyed all the webdesign/programming things I’ve done since last week? Ahhh. I love it! I remember this is the main reason why I took up Computer Science in college. :-B Now if only I could really apply it in the real world, as in do this for a living. Now that would be fun. :D

Star Apples?

Okay, I think it’s pretty presentable now. :) This is the less pink layout I wanted, and if you didn’t see this post before I edited it, I realized that I used Christmas colors here, but according to the Color Schemer website where I picked this scheme, it’s supposed to be apples. Green, red and the yummy flesh inside. Yum. :9 And because I liked stars, I also added them here. Now for a short math equation:

Star + Apples = STAR APPLE!

Does anyone know what this fruit is? :) It’s also known as Chrysophyllum cainito, or locally as caimito/kaimito. As described:

It has round, purple-skinned fruit that is often green around the calyx, with a star pattern in the pulp. Sometimes there is a greenish-white variety of the fruit. The skin is rich in latex, and both it and the rind are not edible. The flattened seeds are light brown and hard. It bears fruit year around after it reaches about seven years of age.

The fruits are delicious as a fresh dessert fruit; it is sweet and best served chilled. The flattened seeds are light brown and hard. Infusions of the leaves have been used against diabetes and articular rheumatism. The bark is considered a tonic and stimulant, and a bark decoction is used as an antitussive. The fruit also exist in two colors, dark purple and greenish brown. The purple fruit has a more dense skin and texture while the greenish brown fruit has a thin skin and a more liquid pulp.

I remember picking and eating star apples all day when I was a kid whenever we’d be staying in my mom’s place in Ilocos. We had this big star apple tree there, where my older cousins would pick fruits and drop them on the ground where us younger ones were waiting to catch it. Then we’d eat it while playing/talking.

Of course, my layout uses nothing of a star apple but of an ordinary apple…I just want to share that little bit of information to you. I wonder if this is in season already?

Anyway, so here’s RefineMe.org version…14 if I am not mistaken. I’m too lazy to check. I played around with Beautiful Day and Gladiola theme and got this. I was getting sick of the pink, as mentioned, and now this is a fresh, summer layout which hopefully will stay long.

Some pages aren’t working yet because I still have to edit/update them, and tinker with the sidebar a bit to get what I want to show. But in the meantime, you may browse around whatever available pages there are up there and if you see anything that doesn’t seem to be working, just let me know. Don’t forget to visit Godchicks or Chismosang Kapitbahay!

Now I must go to EDSA Shrine to hear First Wednesday Mass. =) Happy lunch, everyone!

New version, new layout

Because I had nothing else better to do tonight, plus I spent the entire day working on this, I decided to upload the new layout and upgrade to WordPress 2.1. Yay. Unfortunately, there are still some things I have to upgrade in this layout and change for the new WP version, which will have to wait until tomorrow because it’s late and I have two birhday greetings to do and I have to sleep.

But in the meantime, enjoy this very…pink layout. This might stay a while, as long as I don’t get sick of it. :P Some things are still kind of confusing me (like where did my next and previous links go??? never mind, I found it), and I hope I could fix them all by tomorrow. If not, I’ll try to get them all done this week. :D

Anyway, it’s bed time. I have to say that WP 2.1 looks spiffy. :P But like I said, it’s bed time. Good night everyone!

P.S. I know! Go drop by Godchicks while I fix this! :) Go on, click!

Of new layouts, meetings and books

Okay, I finally got this layout up. It’s been sitting in my hard drive for too long, and it feels so good to be able to see something fresh in this domain. Now I can stop worrying about this. :D But if you find anything that looks out of whack, please do tell me. :D

Edit 011507, 6:06pm: The layout is centered on IE and the menu bar is quite spacey, plus there are some unaligned images within the content. On Opera it looks pretty much the same with Firefox…so I suggest you guys use Opera or Firefox! But don’t worry, I’ll fix this in IE. :D

MV Doulos, taken from my Camera phoneMy arms hurt. It feels the same way as when I lifted hollow blocks during this community service we had for FORMDEV back in college. And that was me lifting about fifty to seventy hollow blocks for the entire day. This was just because of lifting three bags of books from our MV Doulos trip yesterday.

Jomar, Chris, Happy and I were four happy bookworms who headed over to the MV Doulos book fair yesterday. When we got there, there was already a lot of people, and the bookshop was packed. It reminded me of some sort of an SM Megamall or Sta. Lucia East midnight madness sale. The place was hot, and you can barely move because you have to always adjust your book basket so as you won’t hit people as you walk. The words “Excuse me” will be a big requirement. ;)

BUT, even if it is hot and there are a lot of people…it was amazing. :) So many books, so many rare titles and really cheap prices! Books are priced by units, and the conversion is 1 unit = P1, so 100 units is P100. There were two “book areas”: the main book shop, where most of the titles are. Genres range from Christian Living and Inspiration (the biggest selection), Bibles, children’s books, atlas and references, cook books, art books and game books. There’s also a small section on CDs (mostly Contemporary Christian and some classics), tapes and little souvenirs such as pens and keychains which are available at the counter.

And then there’s this other area, which looks like a book sale since you have to look through the big carts to find a book you might like. There are also CDs and mugs available…but that’s not the best part. The books there are priced P50/novel! And they’re good condition novels too. The CDs are priced P50 for three CDs! Bargain, eh? The titles are quite old though, but if you’re a real book lover, you’d certainly get a couple or so of books there. I got seven. :P Haha.

Behold my MV Doulos stash:

MV Doulos CDsCDs (top to bottom in the picture):

  1. Rise (Building 429). B429‘s second album, which is one of my favorites. :) It costs P500, which is pretty normal, but because it’s not available in the country, I just have to buy this. :D There’s a slight damage on the CD case, but the contents are still in good condition.
  2. Warren Barfield (Warren Barfield). Mr. Barfield’s (swoon!) first album, which made us fall in love with him in the first place. :D One of my favorites, and this is a really rare gem. :)
  3. Say-So (Say-so). This is what I call “leap of faith”. Jomar showed me this CD and told me it was old alternative Christian music, and because I need three CDs to make it P50, I decided to get this since I’m an alternative kind of girl. I still have to listen to this. :D
  4. Sunny Day (John Cox). I know only of one John Cox song, Sanctuary, but because I know this artist, and this particular CD is cheap, I grabbed it. :D I’ve heard only the first few tracks but so far it sounds promising. :)
  5. Subscribe to the Vibe (Abundant). As most of you know, I’m not a party/club/bar person. I don’t really like dance/trance music because I can’t see its point. Happy urged me to buy this CD. I wondered how this CD would last with me, but when I played it last night, I actually liked it. :) That’s something new. :P I like what’s written inside the sleeve:

Abundant is a collective of people committed to providing safe spaces and places of cultural expression. The inspiration for this project has been to combine the 90’s sound of the underground dancefloor with the inspirational gospel voice of praise to God, who makes all things possible for those who believe.

    Great stuff. :D

MV Doulos BooksAnd the books:

  1. Girl Time: A Celebration of Chick Flicks, Bad Hair Days & and Good Friends (Laura Jensen Walker). I wasn’t supposed to get this, but Happy pointed it, so I immediately dropped the other book and grabbed this. :D I love Laura Jensen Walker, and I’m halfway through the book already and I’m loving it. :) To my girl friends, we should do some stuff here soon!
  2. The Day I Was Crucified: As Told by Jesus Christ (Gene Edwards). I saw this once in a website, and I was curious, but I couldn’t find it here. I found it at Doulos, and for P150 only. :D I grabbed it, and I’m planning to read this by the Holy Week, since it’s about Christ’s passion. I think this is going to be a major tear-jerker.
  3. The Martyr’s Song (Ted Dekker). P100, hardcover and a free CD! I don’t usually buy hardcover, but this one is a thin one, and Happy told me this is a great book. :) Looking forward to reading this. :D
  4. Patience (Lori Copeland). A lighthearted romance, as said in the back of the book. This is one of my first Lori Copeland books, and it seems like a historical fiction too, and I hope it’s not boring. :)
  5. June (Lori Copeland). Same as above. :D
  6. Atonement Child (Francine Rivers). I’ve seen this for P400 at OMF, and it’s only P50 at Doulos! Haha. From the reviews it seems good. :D
  7. Last Sin Eater (Francine Rivers). Same as above. :)
  8. Scarlet Thread (Francine Rivers). And again, same as above. :)
  9. Leota’s Garden (Francine Rivers). Ditto.
  10. And the Shofar Blew (Francine Rivers). The summary of this book reminds me of The Visitation by Frank Peretti, sans the supernatural part. Tuesday already read this and she said it’s good, so there. :)

Now you see why my arms hurt. I had to lug that around, plus my SVP package (free Didache, Gabay, Companion and Sabbath — anyone want?)…although I’d have to thank the boys for carrying my packages half the time. ;) After eating lunch at Gary’s, Chris and I tagged along with Jomar for the Blogger Parteeh ’07 steering committee meeting (more details in another post about the parteeh next time. And yes, it’s spelled like that). I met some of the “famous” people in the blogosphere (haha, link baiting galore here): Migz, Juned, Rico, Sasha, Carlo and Mr. Abe himself (I have been lurking around his blog for so long already! haha). Fun discussions, and I look forward to seeing them again. Around 5:30, we parted ways and went home.

Now I have no idea where to place all these books. My bookshelves are full, and now all these new books are sitting on my sofa bed, waiting to be covered with plastic and placed somewhere. Again: I need a bookshelf. But I don’t have a place to put it here in my room. :-s

My arm still hurts, and the day is almost ending so tomorrow’s back to work. I hope these muscle pains subside tomorrow because it’s gym time in the morning tomorrow with my brother.

And this post is too long already. I should get out of my room and watch TV with my mom. She promised me a pedicure today, yahoo! :) Off I go. :D

New layout among other things

Hello, what do we have here? :) Finally a new layout. :) I wasn’t supposed to let this out until Wednesday but I decided to go ahead and have this up now before I lose interest in it. So here. Layout information will be updated here by tomorrow. This is the first dark layout I’ve done for my website! Like it? Comments are appreciated. :)

I missed RJ‘s celebration today because I fell asleep during the afternoon and missed the meeting time. Oh well. That’s why I went to finish this layout. And okay, fine, I was feeling a bit lazy to go out already. I swear, I have no social life. Well, little. I wish I have enough drive to go out and gimmick every weekend so at least I have enough activity. Haha. I feel like such a social loser. :P I need to get my act straight. Anyway, tomorrow is another Monday, and I am facing a lot of work for this week, I’m pretty sure of that. I’ll take it one day at a time, thank you very much. :) There’s a mid-week “vacation” for All Saint’s Day, and I kind of wish Thursday would be off too, but then, that’s work for you. Things to look forward to next week: payday and the possible lunch out with some officemates on Tuesday. :) Yeah yeah.

This weekend felt long. I need to fix some things here first before hitting the sack. Good night everyone! :)

And yet more job hunting thoughts

Before anything else, I finally uploaded my online portfolio. Do check it out, especially if you have jobs for me. Haha. :D

After two weeks of inactivity with my job hunting, I’m back to doing it again. After the call I was waiting for didn’t come, I fell in some sort of sad mode. Not depression mode exactly; it’s like when you’re waiting for something to come but it was delayed and you don’t know what to do. Ah, disappointment, that’s the term. Plus there were other things that occupied my mind the past weeks that I fell into some sort of limbo. I wanted to have a job, but I’m afraid to be rejected. I’m sure a lot of people went through this, and I guess this is my time.

Last week, after uploading this layout, I was working on my online portfolio. At the same time, I was tying up the phone line at home with the Internet because I was afraid of whatever calls that might come for me. I know I have a phone call phobia, but it was never with incoming calls. It’s just that…I was afraid of getting job offers from companies I don’t want to apply to and then tell them that I’m not interested…or get job offers and actually go to the interviews but end up not wanting the job anyway. I’m also afraid of explaining to my mom why I don’t want the job…because I don’t want to sound picky, even if I actually am being picky.

Testing, testing, hello? Check, 1, 2…

Hello, hello? Is this new layout all ready and all?

I think? HAHA, YES! I finally made a new layout! :) Isn’t it spiffy? All colorful and cheerful and all? Because of my current unemployment status, I’ve decided to get on and make a new layout for my website because I was getting sick at looking at all the greens. Now it’s all rainbow-y and colorful and I love it! It’s been two years since I made a rainbow-y layout and I like this one better than the first one. :P

Anyway, this is my first time to really make a WordPress theme from scratch (the previous layout was based on Kubrick), and if you see some bugs, please don’t hesitate to tell me all about it. I still have to update some content to match the new layout, so if you see some traces of the past, wait a bit and I’ll have it renewed later. :) Hopefully I’ll be able to update everything tonight. :) I updated the content already and I think they all look spiffy. If I happen to miss anything, please tell me. :) And I’d have to note the update I did at the domain section, I added a longer and more detailed description of this layout. Go see. :D

So…tell me what you think! :) I’ll try to churn out some new layouts faster this time and OH YEAH! I have some more sites up my sleeve this time, so hold on tight and watch for changes and additions to refineme.org! :)

Have a rainbow-y day, everyone! :)

Multi-category post

Update: I finally have Google Adsense in my site. I’ve been hearing lots of things about this and the main (and probably only) reason why I signed up for this is to earn money. Why not? I mean, there’s no harm in putting them here, as far as I am concerned. Don’t worry, I won’t be changing my posts to get higher-paying ads. :)

Randomnities: I got my temporary driver’s license today. Okay, I got it yesterday, actually, but today I went back to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to get my second picture taken for the actual card. I got to see my picture there and in fairness, it actually looked good! Haha, but I need to practice driving. Badly. I was the one who drove the Lite Ace out of the garage earlier and though I managed to get it out without any accidents or the engine shutting down, my brain got all frazzled because there’s so much to do/so much happening with manual cars. BOO. I also got the (automatic) Lancer our earlier and that was easier. Of course, duh, it’s automatic.

So now, I’m gonna need to practice on manual, but I think I’ll be driving the automatic more. Because it’s easier and it’s less hassle to the mind. Haha. And tomorrow, I’ll be driving that car! Wohoo! I make it sound easy, but to be honest? Everytime I drive, my nerves get to work. Haha. I’ll get used to this. By November I shall be able to drive at EDSA! I claim it! :P

Pluggings: I joined a couple of message boards recently, just to kill time: Intrigue MB, Radiant MB and PhilWorship Forum. It’s pretty fun, though Intrigue MB needs more people, so if you’re not doing anything much and you want to pass time and meet new friends, go join Intrigue MB! =) My nickname there is stargirl. PhilWorship Forum is for Filipino Christians who want to talk about Christian music and worship, so if you like those two, go register! :D

Writer's Block

Oh yeah, update! I updated some of the content of the RefineMe.org. :) Look up there at the menu under the header graphic. :) I’m not yet done writing the About section, but the Faith and Writings are already done. I still have some more additions in the Writings sections that I have yet to add, plus I need to figure out a hack that would let excerpts show in the link. Haha. Anyway, I’d really appreciate comments any of the stories I posted. :)

I believe in the power of positive prophecy. And because of that, I will write it down here for anyone who cares enough to read this to know: Sometime in the near future, I will write and publish a book.

Amen.

Sweet Valley Kids (image courtesy of readingwell.com)The first writer I got introduced to is Elizabeth Wakefield. Yes, Elizabeth Wakefield of Sweet Valley fame. I know she’s not a real writer, but reading so much about her during my childhood years influenced me to want to be a writer. I loved their stories so much and I was so amused that Elizabeth could already write stories when she was seven that I thought, I could do that too.

And I tried to do it. I think I started writing stories when I was in Grade 3. I can’t remember what my first story was about exactly, but most of my stories then were about a group of friends who got into different adventures and mis-adventures — I thank Francine Pascal and Sweet Valley for that. :p The first real series I made was about a group of friends named Sarah Springfield, Carmella Churnichan, Jericho Villa, Patrick Grange, Veronica and Ericka, I think. I can’t remember the names of the rest. They were a group of friends who all live in Ireland and formed some kind of club and whatnot. They have this awesome clubhouse that my friends and I can only dream about, as well as love teams: Jericho and Sarah (my favorite) and Carmella and Patrick. I knew that their group got bigger and there were even French twins where one of them was psychic and the last solid story I remembered about them was that they were investigating in a haunted house (against the warnings of their group’s resident psychic) in their town where a vampire was supposed to live. Sarah got hypnotized by the vampire and eventually became one, and Jericho had to do something about it or else Sarah would be gone from him forever. He ends up killing Sarah the vampire and then he wakes up, realizing it was only a dream.

Boring huh.
