Happy Anniversary!

This day last year, I joined the workforce.

Happy anniversary!

But unlike my other friends who celebrated and will celebrate their one year anniversary of being employees in the same company, I’m not. In case you still don’t know, I resigned from my job a little over two months ago and joined a new one right after. So it’s going to be a year before I celebrate my one year anniversary here, but I’ve been paying taxes employed for a year now. :) Praise God. :)

I was reading past entries from the moment I was musing about job hunting, scared of not finding the right job, getting a sign, finally getting a job, my first day at work, to the moment I was considering getting out, to trying it out here but being disappointed, to actually wanting out, to finding some sort of peace after lots of overthinking, and to finally taking that leap that got me where I am right now. It’s funny how it feels like it’s been such a long, long time since all of those happened, but it’s only been a year. A long, challenging albeit wonderful year. Thank You!

THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT JOBS FOR THE PAST YEAR:

  1. The only thing holding you back from your dream job is yourself. Seriously. “Dream jobs” are subjective — you could initially not like the job but end up loving it, or like the job but end up hating it. It’s all up to you, really.
  2. Don’t be afraid to apply in all companies you want. I have to admit, I felt very insufficient for any job interview I was scheduled with and with all companies that I wanted to apply to. I felt like I lacked the experience, I lacked the talents, so and so. But if you’re a fresh graduate and they’re looking for a fresh graduate, by all means apply (as long as it’s the same course :D)! The more job applications/interviews you go through, the more experienced you are on it and the more choices you have.
  3. You don’t have to go to every job interview you are called to. As much as you can apply everywhere, if you don’t want to go to the job interview, don’t. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t go anymore. It’s not that you’re being picky, but if you don’t want to work there, you don’t have to go. Of course, be professional and tell the company that you can’t make it anymore or you’re not interested.
  4. You don’t have to accept the first job offer you get. Trust me on this. You can, but if it doesn’t feel that right (as in like 80% right), don’t. Of course, it’s really good on experience and in the resume, but you might end up regretting it if a better job offer comes after you signed the job offer given. Then again…
  5. If a better job offer comes even if you’re just supposed to start, you can take that instead of the first one. But of course, be professional and tell the other company that you won’t be working anymore. Professionalism is the thing here. :D
  6. It is possible to make friends in the office. And like every friendship, it takes time to grow, so you don’t exactly spill your deepest and darkest secrets to your officemates like that. But it is possible. :)
  7. A smile and a good word comes a long, long way. Just because you’re inside the workplace and not in school doesn’t mean you can’t say good stuff and commend each other and such. Showing a pleasant disposition at work can give you a good day, and saying nice things about each other and/or encouraging each other can boost each other’s morale, making everyone a happy employee. Trust me, I know.
  8. You deserve that much. It’s right not to ask too much on the first time, but you don’t deserve anything too low either. ;)
  9. When the opportunity comes, grab it. This is so cliche, but it is so true. When an opportunity presents itself to you, don’t be afraid to go for it, even if it means leaving your comfort zone, or subjecting yourself to another series of exams and interviews. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Dive! Isang talon lang yan. ((Read: It only takes one leap.))
  10. And finally…Your boat is God’s boat. Your job is God’s job. Work is given by God, therefore, it can bea form of worship. Let me quote Max Lucado on this:

To us all, Jesus says, “Your work is my work.”

Our Wednesdays matter to him as much as our Sundays. He blurs the secular and sacred. One stay-at-home mom keeps this sign over her kitchen sink: Divine tasks performed here, daily. An executive hung this plaque in her office: My desk is my altar. Both are correct. With God, our work matters as much as our worship. Indeed, work can be worship.
    (Cure for the Common Life)

I was supposed to write this long entry about how I got where I am, but now I am at a loss for words. My heart feels so full all of a sudden, that all I can say/write right now is thank You. Because it’s the only thing I can say. As hard as it was waaaay before, I’m not regretting one thing because I know I’m a better person after all those experiences. And I wouldn’t trade this for anything else, even if the trade off is I can work at home (unless the company allows me to :P). Because if it weren’t for His goodness, I wouldn’t be where I am, I wouldn’t be who I am right now, who is entirely different a year ago. :) Again, Thank You.

So here’s to another year. *Cheers* Maybe when I turn one year here in this company I’ll tell the story of how I landed here, just so it feels nice. ;) But right now…I’ve got to complete an online training. :P

Happy anniversary to me! =)
